Next Gen year 1 week 10

Hello blog

This week we were set a penultimate weekly assignment before our big task. The task for this week was to design a fidget spinner. For this we also learnt an additional tool that could help us which was the curve tool. However i noticed while creating it this tool was not of use to me as by adding more sub-divisions it only became more of an distorted object. As of yet i have been unable to find the resolution but will look into it.

This is the first one i created. For this I used a basic cylinder and went into the duplicate special menu to create 3 identical cylinders all the same amount of degrees away from one another. As I have previously mentioned i was unable to show off the new curve skill which i learnt so i tried a different method. For this i added a large cylinder in the middle to 3 other smaller cylinders. I then went to edit the mesh by going to the Boolean's and taking away the difference creating the arms which connected to the center piece. Whilst the outcome for the arms look terrible it was all I had to work with.
My second undoubtedly resembles the look of the first one. This is only the case because I wanted  to texture the center piece so I just added a brand of a celebrity to it.

The third spinner i created is fairly easy and self explanatory on how it was designed. For this i just made 2 legs which i just duplicated to make the spider.
For this last one I used a block which i smoothed down and changed the sub division count. This is because i changed the block into the shape by changing the vertices to form the shape. As well as this i also did the same process to shape the blue part of the spinner. The only other noticeable thing is the Boole ans i added to  create the holes.

Overall this has been a satisfactory final product but i am not pleased with it. This is  mainly down to to the curve tool so if i were to do it again i'd try to find a resolution. If it still wouldn't work i'd continue using Boolean's until i create arms which don't look so horrendous.

Art fundamentals essay

Art fundamentals essay

Introduction
For this week’s assignment I was given the task to choose a piece of traditional artwork and research it.  For this I have to write an essay where I will talk about all the key components which will create it such as; composition, colour, light, perspective and volume. Keeping this in mind the art piece I have chosen to write about for this essay is’ The scream’ by Swedish artist Edvard Munch.

Thesis
This picture is actually autobiographical.  The expression is based on Munch’s experience as his two associates leave him on a walk causing him to scream which pierces through nature. This is perfectly shown through Munch’s style of art as nature is shown through flowing curves which explains the state of the person in the foreground of the painting.  The scream could signify the destruction of a human personality by the force of nature which is shown by the person in the foreground being dehumanized as whilst it is based off of Munch’s experiences the character resembles a creature with a lack human features.

Body

Composition
In his work of art Munch shows how sophisticated his work is by creating a contrast through nature and man. This is down to Munch’s trademark art style of curvy flowing lines representing nature. This demonstrates the point of the piece as the figure instead is flowing and blending in with the nature. Overall there are many places in this art which show contrast to overall create a balanced composition.

Colour
The colour scheme on this piece is mostly analogous. This is because in this piece Edvard Munch mainly uses the same colours but uses various shades from these colours.  In addition to this The grey, black and blue hues of land and water are colours which strongly connote with depression and death. The orange and red clouds in the sky show the intenseness of nature, whilst also creating a splendid contrast between man and nature. Another significant contrast is the characters pale face comparing with the dark black eyes of the character. This causes attention to be brought to the eyes as they stare out at the audience trying to break the forth wall which is common in Munch’s work.

Light
Light is significant in this piece because the figure seems to be engulfed by darkness with the landscape below blanketed in the shadow. Light only appears off into the distance where the two other figures are moving towards it. This links to the interpretation that the two figures are leaving the one in the background to go to the physical representation of sanity with Munch’s figure leaving it which is causing him to scream. Light further supports this interpretation of his piece.

Perspective
In ‘The scream’ perspective is used differently. Instead of showing the figure in the foreground to be 3D and look realistic Munch has done the opposite showing the figure being distorted in a way of him blending in with the flow of nature, purposely making the image un-realistic.  This is achieved to create and eerie tone for the whole piece which is flawlessly executed.

Volume
Negative space is used in this image because the character in the foreground isn’t the only thing with it being next to the side of a bridge. Moreover uses a couple of picture planes with them being the ocean as well as the bridge. Despite Munch’s signature art style this piece of art still successfully creates form for the picture.

Conclusion
The Scream may have been influenced by events in Munch’s own life. In Munch’s childhood, he lost his mother and several siblings. In his adult life, Munch never married and was left by his only love. Munch also suffered from illness, and due to his life full of tragedy and depression, he became a recluse in his later years. In all, Munch artistically used the elements of movement, colour, lighting, form, and balance to create a clear, eerie mood.
Overall my favourite part of the piece is how there’s a lot of hidden meaning towards  with many interpretations as well as how nearly everything contrasts with something yet all builds up to create a balanced composition.

Next Gen year 1 week 9

Hi again it's me.

This week we were given the task of creating and texturing a jet pack on MAYA. For this i could either create something or base the image of an existing one. As my knowledge of jet packs is very limited I chose to base it off of the MARVEL character Falcon by combing his 2 wing suit jet packs.

Whilst creating this i struggled a lot on finding a starting point. Whilst doing it i found that the easiest part was creating the body to it because it doesn't require that much effort to create it. The areas in which i struggled with are the jets. This is because it took many attempts to get right. Whilst this wasn't hard i found redoing it to be tedious and frustrating. In addition to this I also don't like how i designed the wings.

On the whole i am quiet displeased with how the final project turned out. If i was to do this again i'd either wedge or extrude a pipe to create the wing line as it came out as rather rigid. Moreover i think i could use more time to improve the wingspan. As well as this i believe more textures can be used to make it more innovative as well as demonstrate range. In addition to this in the pre-production phase i would find a better image to base the work off as i based it of 3 images which in hindsight was a terrible idea.

Art fundamentals

This is a mind map demonstrating the features required to write an essay

Art fundamentals

 Rule of thirds
The rule of thirds is set on having the focus of the image away from the center.  To check the method in which to do so is to place the image in a 3*3 grid and see where the main focus of the image lays. For this image in particular the main focus is the building which is placed in the left of the image.

 Rule of odds
The rule of odds expresses to uses an odd amount of objects in the foreground to keep the viewer interested. This rule specifically applies to this image because there are 3 people in the foreground of the image.

 Rule of simplification
This image falls under the rule of simplification. This is because in the foreground there is 1 main focus being the light. In addition to this the image isn't over-complicated and easy to the eye.
 Rule of balance
This is the most simplest of the rules. This rule is based on creating an overall balance, making the image pleasing and harmonious. This image demonstrates it because the parts of the speed bump are both equal.

Rule of space
This image shows the rule of space. This is because it shows a sense of space in which the viewer can move through. In this specific example the space which can be moved through is the sky.

Art fundamentals

For this piece would just about get a pass. This is because he uses a few points related to the topic. In addition to this few subject specific terminology is used.

For me this would get a merit. This is because some subject specific terminology is used. Furthermore detailed references are made  suggesting a decent amount of knowledge towards the subject.

Zainabs work is a distinction. This is because they show that they have effectively researched the topic and accurately uses terminology.

Art fundamentals week 6 pt 3

Hello blog
This piece of art was created by Julian Beever. Beever was born in Leicstershire, England. He noticed his passion for art from the age of 5 and throughout his academic life exeled through it. He went on having numerous jobs before he travelled the world doing freelance work. I personally like this art because of the amount of effort and detail he puts in his pieces and especially in this one he truly captures all aspects of the glass. Whilst doing this work all Beever uses is a set of chalk to create his 3D drawings. For me i believe the meaning of the optical illusion could inspire a product of either games animation or VFX because the point is everything isn't what it appears to be and that allows for a deeper meaning.

Art fundamentals week 6 pt 2

Hello blog
This piece of art was made by UK grafiti artist Robert Del Naja. Del Naja was born in Bristol on the 21st of January 1965. Whilst growing up Robert Del Naja struggled creating art because he is colour blind. Despite that he continued to create artwork as well as a band for whom he incorperates many of his pieces with. Del Naja creates his art using spray paint and stencils. For me i believe this could be an influence for a games, animation or VFX product due to the corporation being made up of bright colours, yet blending in with the bright background causing the black & white person to stand out which for me looks like it would inspire a watch dogs game.

For me i find this artist and his work inspiring for two things. Firstly is how Robert Del Naja overcame his colour blindness because he was so driven to create art. In addition to this grafiti is a petty crime in the UK therefore this man risks a lot to create his pieces of art which inspires me to put effort in to my work because i know he is risking his possible career to make art and that is level of dedication and passion i try to add in.

Art fundamentals week 6 part 1

Hello blog

This image is a piece of concept art from the film Guardians of the galaxy with  the artist likely being a MARVEL employee. For me this is interesting because it is art based on science fiction, For me this is interesting because science fiction is a genre filled with creativity and endless possibilities which aspires me to do more and always be creative to a piece of art. This piece of art is  analogous. This is because it consists of the same colour but uses multiple shades of it. Furthermore I find it inspiring because science Fiction is my favorite genre. In addition to this this is literally inspiration for a VFX  product being the planet Xandar.

Hello blog

For this weeks assignment we were asked to draw a face at 3 different angles; at eye level, above eye level and below eye level.

The first drawing i did was at eye level. Whilst doing it i noticed it is by far the easiest one to do. Unlike this though the other two i struggled more on which is likely due to the perspectives they had to be in.

On the whole i am rather pleased with this as i believe i have done well for myself as the drawing resembles the person i drew as well as using all three perspectives effectively. If i had to redo this assignment i'd focus alot more onto the above and below eye perspective as they could overall use more work.

Next Gen year 1 week 8

Hello blog

This week I was given the task of creating my own tower and to sculpt it on MAYA. Before i were to do this though i had to go on Photoshop to create a tower out of already existing images, known as photo bashing. For this I placed a picture of a water tower and added other images to it to create a weird fantasy tower.

When making the tower I started by adding in all of the objects to overall resemble the shape. Then from there i went into to details, specifically building a small turret on the side. Overall on this project  creating the turret was the most time consuming part because it was the most detailed as well as the fact i allocated a lot of time to the base of it. Then from there I went on to texture it which was the easiest part as i didn't run into too much trouble whilst doing it.

Overall i Believe i used an okay amount of techniques and methods whilst creating it. I also like the turret I added to it mainly because of how that is what i spent the most time and went in depth to.

If i had to redo this I would allow myself to spend more time on Photoshop photo bashing to come up with a more creative tower. In addition to this if i had more time i would use it to create reflective windows to make the tower more realistic.

This image is analogous. This is because the colours  in the image mostly consist of different shades within the same colour. I chose this because of the multiple hues of colour creating the desert. The colour wheel even shows this as the pigments are all shown next to each other.

This image is complimentary because it is made up of 2 distinct colours which blend well together. I chose this image because of how vibrant the 2 colours are.

This image is triadic because it is made up of many vibrant colours. I chose this fine piece of art because there are hues of red and blue which really cause the image to stand out. This colour technique is primarily used in cartoon and more animated styled video games and films. This is due to the fact it focus on showing energetic colours.

 Hello blog

for this art fundamental assignment i was given the task of drawing out peoples positions whilst effectively using scaling figures. For me overall i much enjoyed it as i beleive i have used a wide range of peoples stances and positions. The negative of this piece is some figures came out better than others but this can be easily ajusted for me as the only way to improve on something like this is with time and improvement.

Next Gen year 1 week 7

Hello blog

Today in MAYA i was taught more about textures and bump mapping. Bump mapping is choosing a texture to add to your object like granite or leather resulting in the appearance differing due to the new texture. in addition to this we were also taught other special effects and options possibly required to texturing an object..Afterwards the class was split up to each create 1 of the 4  elements assigned to them. For this i was assigned the element of fire. For this i created 4 generic spheres. I individually changed them all to create 4 un-identical spheres which each resemble fire by having different bump maps, transparency's and glowing effects to create my final product after rendering it.
Before render
After render

On the whole i am proud with how it has turned out as the orbs represent the same element whilst also using varied effects. Overall my biggest negative for this occurred in the pre production phase of the assignment as when it was set it took me a while to comprehend what the task was but as i got on i found this to be a fun and simpler task.

In the next day on MAYA i was doing character rigs and animating them into poses. For this I was shown 2 poses and had to move the character rig to fit them. The poses i were given was a high jump kick and a bicycle kick which i replicated. Whilst doing this i found it entertaining. Despite this whilst doing it i found moving the characters legs a nightmare as they would just reset sometimes causing me to repeatedly attempt to fix it.

Hello blog

This time my assignment was to draw two rooms, one being in 1 point perspective and the other being 2 point perspective. During this activity i found it hard to concieve but as i knuckled down it became more clearer for me. Whilst doing it the hardest part was shaping it into my rooms and adding notable detail. If i were to do it next time i would include shading as well as lighting for shadows as well as add more 3D objects to make the peice stand out more.
